Supporting Local: Proudly Canadian at Co-op

Here at Co-op, we take pride in being a truly Canadian company—from our Board of Directors to the community groups we support. Our commitment to local goes beyond our ownership structure; it extends to the products on our shelves and the suppliers we work with. When you shop at Co-op, you’re not just buying groceries—you’re investing in Western Canadian farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers who grow, raise, and produce high-quality food close to home.

Look for the Label: Made in Western Canada

Want to choose products that are raised, grown, or produced nearby? Keep an eye out for the Made in Western Canada label at your local Co-op Food Store. This label represents our commitment to supporting local economies and ensuring our customers have access to fresh, high-quality products from their own backyard.

Western Canadian farmers and ranchers work hard to bring us fresh fruits and vegetables, premium meats, and innovative new food products. By choosing Made in Western Canada products, you’re not only getting the best in freshness and quality, but you’re also strengthening local communities, creating jobs, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

Understanding "Product of Canada" vs. "Made in Canada" Labels

When shopping for Canadian goods, you may notice two distinct labels: "Product of Canada" and "Made in Canada." While both signify

Canadian production, they have different requirements based on the percentage of costs incurred within the country.

What Does "Product of Canada" Mean?

The Product of Canada label indicates that at least 98% of the total direct production costs—including ingredients, materials, and manufacturing—were incurred in Canada. This means the item was primarily sourced and produced within Canada, reflecting strong domestic origins.

What Does "Made in Canada" Mean?

The Made in Canada label applies to products where more than 51% but less than 98% of the total direct costs were incurred in Canada. While these products still undergo significant processing within the country, some materials or ingredients may be sourced internationally.

Built on Local, Committed to Quality

Co-op was founded on the principle of being truly local, and we’ve remained dedicated to that promise. As a locally owned and operated organization, we don’t just support local—we are local. Our partnerships with Western Canadian suppliers help drive economic growth in our communities while ensuring that our customers have access to fresh, top-quality products every day.

By choosing Co-op, you’re choosing to support the people who put food on our tables. Look for the Made in Western Canada label next time you shop and take pride in knowing you’re making a difference!
